Q: Can an Indian resident gift money or shares to family members tax-free?
A: Under the proviso to Section 56(2)(x), gifts of any amount received from specified 'relatives' (including spouse, siblings, lineal ascendants, and descendants) are completely exempt from Indian income tax. However, careful documentation via registered gift deeds is vital.
